George D. Higgins

GREENWOOD

George D. Higgins, 86, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2015, in Greenwood. He was a resident of New Whiteland.

George was born July 12, 1928, in Virgie, Pike County, Kentucky, to Charles and Roxie McIntosh Higgins.

He was a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran.

He married Jessie Burke on June 8, 1951; they were married for 63 years.

He attended Indiana University.

George was a meat cutter by trade, working at several local businesses. After retiring in 1996, he worked at Abe Martin Lodge as a baker for six years.

He was a member of the American Legion and Brown County Veterans of Foreign Wars and Spearsville Road Church of Christ.

He was active in Boy Scouts. George loved reading and being outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie Higgins of New Whiteland; four children, Dennis (Denise) Higgins of Whiteland, Iris (Mike) Gindling of Spearsville, Rebecca (Charles) Murphy of Florida, and Neal (Joy) Higgins of Camby; a sister, Barbara (Mike) Gordon of Florida; three brothers, Charles W. (Eva) Higgins of Illinois, Frank Higgins of Florida, and Freddie (Diane) Higgins of Whiteland; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Emmett, Dillard and Phillip Higgins; and a sister, Pearl Goins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 N. U.S. 31. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
