Eleanor ‘Jean’ Akers

Eleanor ‘Jean’ Akers, 91, of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015.

She was born on Sept. 11, 1923, in Defoe, Kentucky to John Owen and Ella June (Clements) Demaree.

She spent her childhood in Kentucky where she was class president of her graduating class at Pleasureville High School in 1942.

She moved to Greenwood after marrying Norman C. Akers nearly 70 years ago on April 1, 1945.

She was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday school and with many women’s activities.

Jean was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Norman Akers; her two sons, Vince (Lisa) Akers of Indianapolis and Glenn (Lee) Akers of Fayetteville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Benjamin (Ali) Studevent-Hickman, Brandy Akers, Zachary (Anita) Akers, Carol Akers, Diana Akers and John Akers.

She is preceded in death by a son, John Akers; her two brothers, David and Samuel Demaree; and her sister, Docia Demaree.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwood United Methodist Church, 525 S. Madison Ave., Greenwood, with the Revs. Bert Kite and In Suk Peebles officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, 481 W. Main Street, Greenwood and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the Greenwood United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Auguste’s Cottage Memory Care at Rosegate in Indianapolis, where Jean spent her last year and was given excellent care and attention.
