Power outage caused by faulty switch

About 1,500 residents lost power Friday morning due to a faulty transmission switch.

The problem was fixed and power was restored within about two hours.

A substation located near Prince’s Lakes had a faulty switch, which led to the power outage, said Johnson County REMC Chief Executive Officer Chet Aubin.

Faulty switches are not a common issue, but in this case the switch was an older piece that needed to be replaced, he said.

Residents started calling the utility company around 7 a.m., and power was back on within two hours, Aubin said. The outages affected residents south of State Road 44 in areas including Edinburgh, Needham Township and Prince’s Lakes.

While the power was out, Franklin opened a warming center in the parks and recreation office due to subzero temperatures Friday morning.
