Day care victim of utility bill scam

A Center Grove area day care was scammed out of nearly $1,000.

Woodside Children’s Center, 3366 W. Fairview Road, received a call from a person claiming to be from Duke Energy, who stated power would be shut off to the day care if the utility didn’t receive a payment on a prepaid debit card, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

The director talked to two different people and went to purchase two cards, one with $500 and one with $450. She called back and gave them the numbers off the cards, the report said.

A short time later, she checked the center’s records and realized the electric bill had been paid, and called the sheriff’s office to report the scam.

Police are warning residents to think twice before sending money over the phone. Anyone who is not sure whether a call is legitimate can call their local police department.
