College update – February 7

Alex Lovelace, who led the Taylor softball team in hitting last year with a .427 batting average, is off to another outstanding start.

A Greenwood Community High School graduate, the sophomore had five singles, two doubles, four RBIs, four runs scored and five stolen bases in 14 at-bats to help the Trojans sweep two games with Northwood and split a doubleheader with Webber International in games played in Florida.

Greenwood

Franklin’s Erica Christy was first of 22 competitors in the shot put (39-11¼) and 10th of 15 in the weight throw at the Rose-Hulman Track and Field Invitational.

Indianapolis’ Kailey Evans was 10th of 32 in the 60-meter dash (8.13) and third of 15 in the long jump (17-1-1/8) at the Indianapolis Track and Field Challenge.

Taylor’s Taylor Allen was 36th of 44 in the women’s 60-meter dash (8.92) and 25th of 32 in the 200 (30.97) at the Wildcat Track and Field Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan. Taylor’s Eric Croft was 33rd of 36 in the men’s 60-meter dash (7.80) and 35th of 40 in the 200 (25.31)

The Dayton women’s tennis team lost 4-3 to Eastern Illinois and won 4-3 against Wright State. Jackie Kawamoto lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to Eastern Illinois and 6-1, 7-5 to Wright State. She and her partner won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles against WSU

Evansville diver Stephanie Tran was fifth of seven at one meter and fourth of seven at three meters in the Aces’ swimming and diving loss to Illinois State.

The Franklin basketball team (11-7, 9-3) defeated Manchester 51-45 and Anderson 71-63. Nichole Thompson had 11 points (3 for 7, 5 for 6), eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in 28 minutes against Manchester and 12 points (4 for 8, 4 for 7), seven rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes against Anderson.

The Danville Community College basketball team (18-5, 3-0) defeated Lincoln College 68-50 and John Wood 77-75. Kelsie Ratliff had 12 points (4 for 15, 4 for 14, 0 for 0), 10 assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots in the two games.

The Hanover men’s basketball team (9-10, 6-6) lost 76-72 to Mount St. Joseph and 103-102 to Bluffton. Jaren Hornbeak had six points (2 for 6, 2 for 4, 0 for 0) and two assists in 37 minutes in the two games.

Franklin

Evansville’s Abby Smith won the 50 freestyle (24.93) in a dual-meet swimming loss to Illinois State.

Franklin’s Adam Shepherd was 22nd of 60 sprinters in the 200-meter dash (24.32) at the Rose-Hulman Track and Field Invitational.

The Indianapolis wrestlers defeated Belmont Abbey 23-21, Anderson 30-13 and King 27-25, and lost 26-16 to Lake Erie. Competing at 184 pounds, Luke Kriech won 10-4 against Belmont Abbey and lost to Anderson 3-1, Lake Erie 16-1 and King 13-1.

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods basketball team (10-9) lost 93-73 to Oakland City. Shelby Parmer had seven points (3 for 11, 1 for 5, 0 for 0), four rebounds, four steals and a team-high five assists in 25 minutes. Tara Parmer had three points (1 for 4, 1 for 3, 0 for 2), seven rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.

Whiteland

Indianapolis’ Farin Hickman was first of 17 in the weight throw (56-4) and third of 24 in the shot put (43-7¼) at the University of Indianapolis Track and Field Challenge. Teammate Melissa Rios was sixth of 32 in the 60-meter dash (8.04), and the Greyhounds’ Robert Geis was sixth of 11 in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (8.85).

Indiana State’s Danielle Muse was sixth of 12 in the mile (5:10.86) and fifth of 14 in the 3,000 meters (10:31.35) at the Northern Iowa Track and Field Invitational.

Sarah Ebeyer was sixth of 12 on the vault, 11th of 12 on the beam and 10th of 12 in the floor exercise in Ball State’s gymnastics loss to Southern Utah.

The Tennessee-Martin basketball team (13-9, 9-0) ran its winning streak to nine with a 64-58 defeat of Tennessee State and a 95-85 win against Murray State. Haley Howard had 10 points (3 for 6, 0 for 1, 4 for 6), three rebounds, one steal and one assist in 25 minutes in the two games.

The IU-Southeast basketball team (16-7, 7-2) lost 93-74 to IU-East and defeated Point Park 65-63 and Carlow 75-55. Michaela Harris had 12 points (4 for 16, 2 for 5, 2 for 4), nine rebounds, four assists and one steal in 56 minutes in the three games.

Seth Morin was eighth of 12 in the 200 freestyle (1:53.58) and fifth of 10 in the 500 (5:05.38) in Franklin’s dual-meet swimming loss to Rose-Hulman.

In a three-team swimming and diving meet with Maryville and Principia, Illinois College’s Jordyn Perry was second of three in the women’s one-meter diving event and third of four in the 100 backstroke (1:22.53). Illinois defeated Principia and lost to Maryville.

Indian Creek

Franklin’s Anna Murdock was fourth of 27 in the mile (5:11.09) and fifth of 26 in the 400 meters (1:01.37) at the Rose-Hulman Track and Field Invitational.

Indiana State sprinter Katie Wise was first in the 60-meter dash preliminaries (7.44) but did not finish in the finals at the Northern Iowa Track and Field Invitational.

The Northern Illinois basketball team (8-10, 4-4) defeated Bowling Green 67-50 and Ball State 65-62. Ally Lehman had eight points 3 for 8, 0 for 2, 2 for 2), eight rebounds and a team-high five assists in 26 minutes against Bowling Green and four points (2 for 8, 0 for 3, 0 for 2), four rebounds, two steals and a team-high seven assists in 39 minutes against Ball State.

The Regis basketball team (12-7, 8-7) defeated Black Hills State 62-59 and lost 76-69 to Chadron State. Erica Von Stein had four points (1 for 6, 1 for 5, 1 for 2) and team highs in rebounds (5), assists (5) and steals (4) in 34 minutes in the win and nine points (3 for 7, 3 for 7, 0 for 0) and three assists in 32 minutes in the loss.

Edinburgh

Taylor Murray started each of the first four games for the Taylor softball team, three wins and one loss, and had three singles, two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs in 15 at-bats.

Franklin’s Ashley Myers was 11th of 19 in the long jump (14-10) and sixth of 11 in the triple jump (32-5½) at the Rose-Hulman Track and Field Invitational.

The Elmhurst basketball team (16-4, 6-3) lost 77-73 to Augustana and won 88-72 against Millikin. Kyle Wuest had 10 points (4 for 11, 0 for 5, 2 for 3), three rebounds, one assist and two steals in 33 minutes in the loss and eight points (4 for 12, 0 for 3, 0 for 0), six assists, one rebound and one steal in 30 minutes in the win.

Center Grove

The Indiana Wesleyan basketball team (22-3, 10-2) defeated Grace 62-55 and St. Francis 76-75. Jonny Marlin had a team-high 15 points (6 for 12, 0 for 2, 3 for 7), two rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes against Grace. His team fell behind St. Francis by 17 points but mounted a comeback that ended with a game winning Marlin pull-up jump shot with 1.3 seconds left. He had a team-high 16 points (5 for 11, 4 for 6, 2 for 2), three steals, two rebounds and a team-high seven assists in 37 minutes in the dramatic win.

The IPFW basketball team (11-11, 4-5) defeated South Dakota 66-55 and Omaha 75-65. Joe Reed had 11 points (5 for 11, 0 for 2, 1 for 2), 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 43 minutes in the two wins.

Shelby Shaffer had a team-high 17 points (5 for 10, 1 for 5, 6 for 8), four rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes in Anderson’s 71-63 basketball loss to Franklin. The Ravens are 1-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.

Franklin’s Madi Kolthoff had six points (2 for 3, 2 for 3, 0 for 0) and three rebounds in 24 minutes in the Grizzlies’ 51-45 basketball defeat of Manchester and nine points (3 for 4, 1 for 2, 2 for 2), one rebound and one assist in 17 minutes in a 71-63 defeat of Anderson. The Grizzlies are 11-7 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

The Manchester basketball team (9-10, 6-6) lost 51-45 to Franklin and 70-60 to Transylvania. Kelcey Daugherty had two points (1 for 3), two rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes in the two games.

The Northern Kentucky basketball team (13-9, 4-3) defeated Stetson 68-62 and lost 67-46 to Florida Gulf Coast. Melody Doss had a team-high 24 points (9 for 17, 3 for 7, 3 for 4), four rebounds, one assist, two blocked shots and one steal in 30 minutes in the win and a team-high 15 points (6 for 11, 1 for 3, 2 for 2), one blocked shot and a team-high six rebounds in 27 minutes in the loss.

The Oberlin basketball team (11-9, 7-4) won 59-46 against Kenyon and lost 73-52 to DePauw. Katie Lucaites had 11 points (4 for 7, 3 for 3), 12 rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal in 46 minutes in the two games.

Nikky Moan led the Trine basketball team (12-8, 6-5) in scoring with 17 points (7 for 8, 3 for 3, 0 for 0) and had two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot in 25 minutes in a 70-58 defeat of St. Mary’s. In a 67-52 loss to Calvin, she had two points (1 for 6), one assist, one steal and a team-high seven rebounds in 29 minutes.

The Wittenberg basketball team (15-5, 7-3) defeated Ohio Wesleyan 66-55 and Denison 41-39. Bobbi Clayton had four points (1 for 9, 2 for 4), one rebound and one blocked shot in 19 minutes in the two games.

Sean Mappes won 8-3 at 174 pounds in Chattanooga’s 35-3 wrestling defeat of Davidson.

Bellarmine’s Shelbi Dishman was fifth of 19 in the 3,000 meters (10:58.04) at the Rose-Hulman Track and Field Invitational. Rose-Hulman’s Ryan Meyer was sixth of 52 in the men’s mile (4:25.96).

Indianapolis’ Kyle Schwartz was second of 12 in the 600 meters (1:24.88), and teammate Casey Wendorff was 19th of 26 in the 3,000 meters (9:35.68) at the Indianapolis Track and Field Challenge. Southern Indiana’s Jordan Jones was 10th of 24 in the women’s shot put (34-2) and ninth of 17 in the weight throw (44-0).

Taylor’s Noah Clayton was 13th of 24 in the 600 meters (1:30.40) at the Wildcat Track and Field Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan.

Anna Gunderson started in each game for the Taylor softball team (3-1) in a doubleheader sweep of Northwood and a two-game split with Webber International in games played in Florida and had three singles, one double, five runs scored, four RBIs and one stolen base in 15 at-bats.

Luke Andersen lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles in Ball State’s 6-1 tennis loss to Cleveland State.

Holly Townsend anchored the winning 400-meter relay team, won the 50 freestyle (24.57) and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team in a swimming dual-meet victory over Ohio Wesleyan. She was second of 10 in the 200 freestyle (1:55.87) and a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team in a win against Wittenberg.

Indiana’s Allie Day was fourth of 10 in the 100 backstroke (56.71) and third of 10 in the 200 backstroke (2:00.71) in a dual-meet swimming win against Louisville.

Arizona competed in a three-team swimming meet with Texas and SMU, losing to Texas and defeating SMU. Emma Schoettmer was fourth of 10 in both the 100 breaststroke (1:03.34) and the 200 (2:14.50).

The Evansville men’s swimming team lost to Indiana. The Aces’ Dan O’Brien was third of four in the 100 backstroke (53.67) and third of three in the 500 freestyle (4:56.07).

The Eastern Michigan swimmers and divers defeated Miami (Ohio). Eastern Michigan diver Dakoda Johnson was second of nine at one meter and sixth of nine in the three-meter event. Teammate Grant Schwarz was fifth of 10 in the 100 breaststroke (58.93) and eighth of nine in the 200 IM (2:00.75).
