Burglars ransack pair of condos

Burglars broke into two Center Grove condos during the weekend and stole kitchen appliances, granite countertops, blinds and a kitchen island — in some cases even the light switches were missing.

The theft from the Westport Homes model units on Kristi Court, off County Line Road, was discovered Sunday night. The burglars kicked in the front door of one of the condos, then made a large hole in the master bedroom wall, which divides the two homes, and walked into the adjoining unit, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

They didn’t get everything from the first unit in the first trip, and some items that had been removed were stacked near a garage door. A refrigerator that was left behind was on a furniture dolly, and some countertops and sinks were stacked near the garage door, according to the report.

But they got away with all the appliances and some granite countertops in the adjoining condo. The burglars stole or damaged nearly $30,000 worth of materials, including the cabinets, lights, drywall, flooring, electrical wire, a fireplace, electrical sockets, electrical face plates, walls and a chandelier, the report said.

A cleaning crew was supposed to be at the house between 8 and 10:30 a.m., because the home was being prepared to be shown. Another cleaner showed up about 8:45 p.m. Sunday and discovered the damage. Neighbors noticed multiple vehicles at the model home Sunday. A white work van was at the house in the morning and the homeowners association president also noticed a sport-utility vehicle with a trailer at the condos around 3 p.m., the report said.
