Grizzlies fall to Pioneers

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Transylvania University shot 64.3 percent from the floor in defeating the Franklin College men’s basketball team 90-78 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday.

Sophomore Aaron Mann scored a career-high 29 points and added 10 rebounds in the contest. The guard has been a double-figure scorer in each of the past eight games.

Sophomore John Beineke added 16 points off the bench. Classmate Robbie Prather rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Transylvania had three players reach double figures, led by Alex Jones’ 40 points. Parker Stansberry and Tim Bickel each had 12 points.

The Pioneers raced out to an 18-9 lead after a 3-pointer by Tristian Burgess with 12:27 left in the first half. The lead grew to 13 points, 34-21, after a layup from Bickel at the 6:19 mark.

Franklin closed the half on a 21-12 run to trail 46-42 at the break.

In the second half, a 10-2 Transylvania spurt stretched the margin to 56-44 following a layup by Jones.

The Grizzlies trimmed the margin to 58-54 after a pair of free throws by Mann with 12:39 remaining.

Transylvania’s Jones scored eight consecutive points midway through the period to give the hosts a double-digit lead. Franklin did not get the margin back under 10 points the rest of the game.
