College update – January 10

Arizona swimmer Emma Schoettmer, a Center Grove graduate, won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.93) and the

200 breaststroke (2:13.81) and

was a member of the winning

200 medley relay team in a

meet with Oregon State, Missouri,

New Mexico State and

Northern Arizona.

The meet was scored as dual meets with each opponent, and Arizona defeated each of the other four teams. Except for fourth-place finishes in both events at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational, which featured top swimmers from all over the country, Schoettmer, a junior, is undefeated in the 200 breaststroke and has four wins and two second-place finishes in the 100.

Both of her losses in the 100 were to a Wildcat teammate whom she defeated in the other four meets.

Center Grove

Wrestling for Tennessee-Chattanooga at the Southern Scuffle, Sean Mappes lost his first-round match at 174 pounds by a 3-2 score to an Army opponent. Moving to the consolation bracket, he pinned a Cleveland State wrestler in 2:38 but was eliminated when he lost 13-6 to a Duke opponent.

(8-5, 5-3) in a 33-17 bowl loss

to Missouri.

The Anderson women’s basketball team (1-10, 0-4) lost 56-55 to St. Scholastica and 85-44 to Transylvania. Shelby Shaffer led the Ravens in scoring in both games, with 15 points (3 for 5, 3 for 5, 6 for 7) in 31 minutes against Scholastica and 16 points (5 for 14, 4 for 10, 2 for 3) in 39 minutes against Transylvania. She had eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals in the two games.

The Franklin College women’s basketball team (6-4, 4-0) lost 77-62 to Ohio Wesleyan and 69-61 to York in a holiday tourney and then won 56-43 in a Heartland Conference matchup. Madi Kolthoff played 34 minutes in the three games and had seven points (3 for 6, 1 for 2, 0 for 0), five rebounds and two assists.

The Northern Kentucky women’s basketball team (8-6) defeated IUPUI 57-43 and lost 72-60 to Wright State. Melody Doss led NKU in scoring in both games, with 15 points (6 for 14, 1 for 3,

2 for 2) in 37 minutes in the win and 17 points (7 for 18, 1 for 5,

2 for 2) in 35 minutes in the loss. The senior had 18 rebounds (a team high 14 in the loss), three assists, two steals and one blocked shot in the two games.

The Oberlin women’s basketball team (5-7) lost 59-34 to Kalamazoo, defeated Illinois Tech

95-35 and lost 83-47 to Chicago. Katie Lucaites had 18 points (8 for 9, 2 for 2), 13 rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot in

43 minutes in the three games.

The Trine women’s basketball team (8-4, 3-1) lost 99-61 to Division I IPFW and defeated

Albion 78-58. Nikky Moan had

10 points (5 for 14), a team-high six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot in 28 minutes against IPFW, and 10 points (5 for 8), eight rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot in 22 minutes against Albion.

The Wittenberg women’s basketball team (10-4, 2-2) defeated Hiram 71-51 and lost 59-58 to Allegheny. Bobbie Clayton played 32 minutes in the two games and had six points (3 for 10), nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

The Manchester women’s basketball team (5-6, 2-2) lost 73-44 to St. Thomas, Minnesota, and won 60-54 against St. Mary’s and 62-45 against Mount St. Joseph. Kelcey Daugherty had seven points (1 for 5, 1 for 2, 4 for 4), two rebounds and two assists in

39 minutes in the three games.

The Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball team (15-1, 3-1) suffered its first loss of the season, bowing 78-72 to Marian. Jonny Marlin led the Wildcats in scoring with 24 points (7 for 16, 1 for 6,

9 for 11) and in assists with six. He also had two rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.

The IPFW men’s basketball team (7-8, 0-2) lost 71-57 to California Poly, 73-67 to Western

Illinois, and 63-58 to IUPUI. Joe Reed had 30 points (10 for 21, 3 for 7, 7 for 12), including a team-high 20 against Western Illinois; 21 rebounds (a team-high nine against IUPUI); two assists; two blocked shots; and one steal in 91 minutes in the three games.

The Mount St. Mary’s men’s basketball team (4-9, 0-2) lost

70-45 to Robert Morris and 85-83 in two overtimes to Wagner. Andrew Smeathers had a team-high 14 points (3 for 11, 3 for 10, 5 for 7), four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 35 minutes against Robert Morris and seven points (3 for 8, 1 for 4, 0 for 0), eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and

one blocked shot in 41 minutes against Wagner.

Edinburgh

The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (11-1, 1-0) defeated Kalamazoo 90-72 and Wheaton 83-75. Kyle Wuest had 13 points (5 for 10, 2 for 6, 1 for 1), six rebounds and one assist in 27 minutes against Kalamazoo and a team-high

17 points (5 for 8, 0 for 2, 7 for 7), five rebounds and one steal in

30 minutes against Wheaton.

Greenwood

The Hanover men’s basketball team (6-5, 3-1) defeated Clark, Massachusetts, 49-45 in

Las Vegas and lost 58-51 to

Defiance. Jaren Hornbeak had

two rebounds, three assists and one steal in 19 minutes in the

two games.

The Franklin women’s basketball team (6-4, 4-0) lost 77-62 to Ohio Wesleyan and 69-66 to York in a holiday tournament and won 56-43 against Earlham in a home conference game. Nichole Thompson had 23 points (8 for 21, 7 for 12), 18 rebounds (team highs against York and Earlham), four assists and five steals in 67 minutes in the three games.

Whiteland

Haley Howard had 10 points (4 for 7, 1 for 4, 1 for 1), one rebound and one assist for the Tennessee-Martin women’s basketball team (5-9, 1-0) in an 85-68 win against Belmont.

Michaela Harris had six points (2 for 3, 2 for 3), one rebound, one assist, two blocked shots and one steal for the IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (10-5) in a 60-56 defeat

of Wilmington.

Indian Creek

The Regis women’s basketball team (8-3, 4-3) defeated Western New Mexico 58-50 and New Mexico Highlands 78-48. Erica

Von Stein had six points (2 for 11,

2 for 10, 0 for 0), 12 rebounds,

10 assists (a team-high nine against Highlands), four steals and one blocked shot in 66 minutes in the two wins.

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team (5-6, 1-0) defeated Bradley 67-54 and Eastern Michigan 54-48 in overtime. Ally Lehman had 10 points (5 for 9) and team highs in rebounds (11) and assists (5) against Bradley and five points (1 for 9, 3 for 3), seven rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and two steals in against Eastern Michigan.

Franklin

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods women’s basketball team (3-9) lost 94-79 to Brescia. Tara Parmer had eight points (3 for 6,

2 for 5, 0 for 0), a team-high seven rebounds, one assist and one

steal in 22 minutes. Shelby Parmer had eight points (4 for 12),

five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 25 minutes.
