Franklin women fall in OT

The Franklin College women’s basketball team lost a 69-66 overtime thriller against York (Pa.) College on Wednesday to conclude play in the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament.

York (4-6), a 2014 NCAA Division III tournament team, led 53-50 with 1:12 remaining before a frantic final minute. Franklin sophomore Lauren DeSutter made a jumper with 59 seconds left to trim the lead to 53-52.

After a missed 3-point shot by York, junior Katie Brewer connected on two free throws with 19 seconds left to give Franklin a 54-53 lead.

York’s Sam Hruz split a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the teams exchanged leads, with sophomore Mandy Fisher giving Franklin a 58-56 edge at the 4:02 mark. York took a 63-62 advantage after a 3-pointer by Brianna Bisci with 1:24 left.

The teams traded layups before a pair of free throws by Hruz gave York a 67-64 lead with 29 seconds left. Franklin cut the lead to 67-66 on a layup by senior Lindsey Dall. York’s Sarah Shearer split two free throws with 15 seconds remaining.

The Grizzlies missed a game-tying layup with five seconds left. York made one free throw to put York on top 69-66 with three seconds remaining. They were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.

Franklin led 38-31 with 13:10 left in the second half after a jumper by sophomore Kayle Comer. Later, two free throws by York’s Morgan Golec tied the game at 48-all at the 3:47 mark.

DeSutter led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points. Brewer and Dall each added 12 points, while Comer and Thompson scored 10 points each off the bench.

York’s Shearer scored a game-high 18 points.

Franklin (5-4) returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it resumes Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play against Earlham.
