Officer slightly injured during scuffle at jail

A correctional officer was checked out at a hospital after a fight with an inmate.

Just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, a correctional officer was checking on inmates at the Johnson County jail. In one cell, the officer could not see the inmate inside and opened the door to check on him.

Once the door was opened, the inmate, Christopher Smith, ran at the officer and out of his cell. Smith tripped and fell, and two officers struggled with him to get him under control, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

During the struggle, Smith elbowed one of the officers above the eye. The officers eventually handcuffed Smith and then put him into a restraint chair, the report said.

The correctional officer who was struck in the face was checked out at Johnson Memorial Hospital, the report said.

The sheriff’s office sent the report to the prosecutor, who will decide what, if any, charges should be filed.
