Manuel G. Alvarez Sr.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.

Manuel G. Alvarez Sr. 95, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, in Greenwood. He was a resident of St. Petersburg, Florida, and a former resident of Gary.

He graduated from high school in Havana, Cuba.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. On April 4, 1945, his Army division freed more than 20,000 people from the Nazi concentration camp in Ohrdruf, Germany, which was the first concentration camp liberated by the U.S. Army.

Manuel retired from U.S. Steel after 45 years as a millwright.

He is survived by his brother, Cesar Alvarez; children, Manuel (Christine) Alvarez Jr., Robert C. (Lena) Alvarez, Gloria J. Kuchaes and Marie A. (Karl) Lofgren; stepchildren, Emil Garcia, Bonnie (Bill) Bosse and Joe (Joyce) Garcia; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, with the Rev. Andrew Corona officiating. Friends are invited to meet with Manuel’s family 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
