Grizzlies stay unbeaten in HCAC

Two double-doubles by forwards Lindsey Dall and Katie Brewer powered the Franklin College women’s basketball team to a 68-56 win at Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Dall, a senior, scored 15 points and had a career-high 13 rebounds. Brewer, a junior, had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Lauren DeSutter and freshman Kelsey Smith rounded out the balanced scoring attack with 10 points each.

Saturday marked the first time two Franklin players have had a double-double since December 9, 2009, against Transylvania.

Franklin (5-1) held a 53-29 rebounding margin, including 24 offensive rebounds in the victory. The Grizzlies never trailed after the Lions scored the first two points of the game.

The Grizzlies used a 9-2 run midway through the first half to take a 17-10 after a jumper from Smith at the 7:37 mark. They maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half after a 28-22 halftime lead.

The margin grew to 12 points, 46-34, following a three-point field goal from freshman Madi Kolthoff with 11:51 left.

Mount St. Joseph (2-5, 0-3 HCAC) got within seven, 48-41, with 8:31 remaining after a layup from Tara Dennis. However, Franklin quickly increased the margin to 15 points, 62-48, following a pair of free throws from DeSutter with 4:04 left.

Dall led the second-half effort with 11 points and nine rebounds. Brewer had seven points and nine rebounds during the first half.

MSJ’s Dennis scored a game-high 18 points and had nine rebounds.

Franklin returns to action Wednesday against visiting Hope College in a non-conference game.
