Letty Wilhelmenia (Schmahl) Kasting

Letty Wilhelmenia (Schmahl) Kasting, 93, passed away on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at her residence at the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin.

She was born on Jan. 21, 1921, in Dale. She was the daughter of Edmund and Martha Margaret (Kaetzel) Schmahl.

She married Dennis E. Kasting on July 21, 1940. He preceded her in passing on June 30, 2004.

Letty is survived by children, Charlotte Ann (H. Lawson) Smith of Spencer, Emily Beth (Randy) Decker-Smithey of Franklin, Martha Denise (Gary) Friermood of Carmel and Theodore “Ted” D. Kasting of Franklin; grandchildren, Jack Fentz, Charles Hasnerl, Bonnie Robertson, Rebekah Styer, Christopher Decker and Anicee Gaddis; 16 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Gibbons of Bethany,brother, Jesse Schmahl of Decatur, Illinois; and sister-in-law, Pauline Kasting of Florida.

She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband, Dennis; seven brothers and sisters; and one great-great-grandchild.

Letty graduated from Seymour High School.

She was employed by L.S. Ayres & Co., retiring in January 1982 as manager of fine jewelry. She later worked for Richard Bennett Furniture, retiring after several years.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. Letty was active in the Caring Ministry at Grace United Methodist Church for many years.

She was an accomplished seamstress, having hand-stitched many quilts over the years for her grandchildren and donated many to the Riley Hospital for Children.

Letty was a very giving person and treasured her family.

Rev. David Lee will conduct a celebration of life service at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Franklin United Methodist Community, Wright Chapel, 1070 W. Jefferson St., Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
