Sheriff’s office investigating string of rural burglaries

Police are investigating at least three break-ins in southern Johnson County.

They also are working to determine if a fourth report of a man in a white box van on a property is related to the break-ins, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

All of the break-ins were reported in Hensley and Union townships Monday.

  • An air compressor, a chain saw and power tools were stolen from a barn in the 7000 block of South County Road 575W before 11 a.m. Monday. Someone entered the building by breaking a window, the report said.
  • In the 5000 block of South County Road 500W, residents reported at 4:45 p.m. Monday the lock to a gate had been broken and two lawn chairs were stolen from the barn.
  • In the 8000 block of South County Road 700W, a resident reported at 5 p.m. Monday a large tool box was missing from a garage and that the door to the garage had been broken into.

Police also were called to a home in the 6000 block of West County Road 150S, northwest of Trafalgar, at 4:30 p.m. Monday. A resident saw a white box van pull into the driveway and a man get out. The man apparently saw the resident lift the blinds in a window and got back into the vehicle and left, striking their car parked in the driveway, the report said.
